The true spirit of Christmas: David’s tale of friendship

  • Author: HammondCare

As the festive season approaches, HammondCare is calling on your generosity to bring warmth, joy, and connection to people facing loneliness. For David, a 76-year-old living alone with life-limiting health issues, a volunteer’s kindness has transformed his life.

Nearly one in three Australians report feeling lonely, with 32% experiencing social isolation. For older adults, loneliness and isolation impact on mental health, double the risk of chronic illness and contribute to depression and dementia.

David is one of many facing these challenges. Living with cancer and heart disease, he receives palliative care and has limited mobility, which makes public transport difficult to access.

While his love of art has remained a constant joy in his life, joining a class to share this passion seemed impossible, until Karen came along.

A volunteer’s life-changing support

Karen, a HammondCare volunteer, stepped into David’s life six months ago, offering much-needed companionship and practical help. Each week, Karen drives David to an art therapy class at HammondCare’s Neringah Hospital or treats him to an outing with coffee and conversation.

“Karen really has changed my life,” David said. “She’s become like family. I thrive on company and conversation, but that’s not so easy to come by anymore. Karen makes all the difference in helping me stay connected.”

For Karen, the experience is equally rewarding. “I look forward to spending time with David every week,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see the change in him. He was quite lonely when we first met, but now he’s more engaged, and I’ve even joined in on the art classes myself!”

How you can help

HammondCare’s 800 volunteers work tirelessly to bring companionship to thousands of vulnerable Australians. But the demand continues to grow, and your support is needed to help more lonely people like David.

Here’s how your gift could help:

  • $25: A Christmas hamper for someone estranged from family.
  • $50: Fuel for a Volunteer to travel and visit those who are isolated.
  • $100: An outing and meal with a Volunteer for social connection.
  • $250+: Resources for group activities like art classes, craft and cooking.
