Caring for older Australians at risk of homelessness

Written by HammondCare | Nov 28, 2022 7:15:29 AM

HammondCare Darlinghurst is a purpose-built, residential aged care home for older people experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness, with high care needs.

This new Home helps fill a gap in existing services by providing permanent accommodation and high level health care to those experiencing homelessness in an area where services are needed most – inner Sydney. We continue to seek funding for additional services we would like to provide our new residents - if you are interested in assisting please contact foundation@hammond.com.au for further details

Homelessness statistics

The latest Census data revealed that over 18,000 older women and men across Australia are without a place to call home. These older members of our community are falling between the cracks for a variety of reasons, including a lack of affordable accommodation, chronic health issues, unemployment, domestic violence, and marriage breakdown.

Sydney’s Darlinghurst is part of an area with the highest concentration in Australia of older people who are homeless. Inner Sydney now has close to 800 people in this category. Research indicates a growing number of people experience homelessness later in life, and there is an increasing incidence of homelessness amongst older women.

This data serves to underline the growing seriousness of this problem, and the worsening situation for older people at risk of homelessness.
