Bringing light to loneliness: Garry’s story this Christmas

  • Author: HammondCare

As Christmas approaches, the HammondCare Foundation invites you to reflect on the power of human connection and how it transforms lives. For people like Garry, who face profound loneliness, a simple act of kindness can mean the world.

The reality of loneliness

In Australia, loneliness is a silent struggle, especially in rural and regional areas where nearly 50% of residents feel socially isolated. This challenge becomes even greater among older adults with complex health needs. Connection - a basic human need - often feels out of reach.

Garry, 67, lives in Bathurst in NSW. His days are marked by chronic pain from a neck injury and limited mobility, confining him to his home. With no mobile phone, internet or regular family contact, Garry’s world has grown increasingly small. Since last Christmas, his only time outside his house has been for a medical appointment.

A lifeline through friendship

For Garry, HammondCare Volunteer Alan has been a beacon of light. Alan’s regular visits bring companionship, shared laughter and a love of music. More than that, they provide something priceless - hope.

“Alan is a good man, who I now call a friend,” Garry said. “His visits make a difference in my life that words cannot express.”

Alan also enjoys his time with Garry: “We spend time chatting, listening to music, and discussing sport or current affairs. Knowing I can ease Garry’s loneliness by simply being there is incredibly rewarding,” Alan said.

You can make a difference

HammondCare’s 800 volunteers provide vital support to people like Garry, but the need is growing. This Christmas, your generosity can help bring connection to those who need it most.

Here’s how your gift could help:

  • $25: A Christmas hamper for someone estranged from family.
  • $50: Fuel for a Volunteer to travel and visit those who are isolated.
